Pentru Sea of Glory: The Epic South Seas Expedition, 1838–1842, a fost distins cu Theodore and Franklin D. Roosevelt Naval History Prize, iar cu cartea „În inima mării”, publicată in 2000, scriitorul a caştigat prestigiosul National Book Award.
